Over 500 volunteers pitched in during Volunteer Appreciation Week, helping to sort and pack thousands of pounds of food that will be distributed to thousands of families in need. Volunteer groups included helpers from Comcast, PECO, Ritz Carlton, Drexel University and more.

The Pennington School was among volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week

Subaru was the top corporate donor at WMMR’s Preston & Steve’s Camp Out for Hunger for the second year in a row. Along with the reward of knowing the immense good they are doing in their community, the top corporation also gets a live Preston & Steve show broadcast from their office. It is a seriously fun morning for all.

This spring, Subaru took the fun even further by using their on air presence as another chance to give back. They posed a challenge to the community, where for each new like they received on facebook during the broadcast, they would donate 4 meals to Philabundance. WMMR’s listeners responded in a big way, and Subaru’s 6,750 new likes resulted in 30,000 meals for those in need across the Delaware Valley. Huge thank you to our friends at Subaru for always thinking of ways to give back!

On Saturday, May 11^th, you can help the Delaware Valley’s letter carriers Stamp Out Hunger  provide assistance to the millions of Americans struggling with hunger.

• Simply leave donations of non-perishable food items, like soup, canned meats and fish, canned vegetables and fruit, as well as peanut butter, pasta and rice, next to your mailbox before the time of your regular mail delivery. No glass containers, please.
• Delaware Valley letter carriers will do the rest, collecting the donations and delivering them to food banks and pantries in the community.

Now in its 21^st year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, with more than one billion pounds of food donated since its inception in 1993.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 million Americans, including nearly 17 million children, are food insecure, meaning they live at risk of hunger.

• Food banks rely heavily on donations and need to be replenished constantly, especially in the summer months when supplies are often low and children are out of school.
• There are approximately 900,000 people at risk of hunger in the Delaware Valley.
• A recent Delaware Valley poll of neighborhood food pantries and neighborhood distributions shows a 29% increase in need over last year and a 98% increase in need over the last 3 years.

Campbell Soup Company, a long time supporter of Stamp Out Hunger, will kick off the effort with a donation of one million pounds of product to Feeding America member food banks.

Every four years, Feeding America and its network of member food banks coordinate a landmark study assessing hunger across our nation. The data collected is then used to inform strategy, programs, and other decisions across the Feeding America network. It is also used in policy formation at both the local and national level. Ultimately, this valuable knowledge empowers us to end the fight against hunger in America.

Volunteers play a critical role in the success of the Hunger Study. Feeding America member food banks, including Philabundance, need energetic volunteers to facilitate a nationwide study of hunger. Volunteers will engage with individuals receiving food assistance, contribute to invaluable research on national hunger and help to effect positive change in in their communities.

Volunteers will be responsible for:

- Attending a mandatory training session
- Traveling to agency sites to facilitate Client Surveys
- Interacting with clients during the agency visit

Volunteers should:

- Be able to visit 5 sites between April and August 2013.
- Possess computer and internet skills
- Be able to communicate effectively with diverse populations
- Exercise discretion and show sensitivity with clients
- Be enthusiastic, Flexible, and patient. Have fun!
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

David Katz of Meme fame is leading Philadelphia’s charge against childhood hunger as the Chef Chair at this year’s Taste of the Nation Philadelphia. Joining Katz will be a veritable who’s who of Philadelphia culinary prowess, with top chefs from the city and surrounding region and talented mixologists from the Philadelphia chapter of the U.S. Bartenders’ Guild. Last year’s Chef Chair, Kevin Sbraga, will join this year’s event as the Honorary Chef Chair.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample an array of culinary excellence from the best-of-the-best restaurants. Desserts, specialty cocktails, wines, premium beer, a fabulous silent auction and other to-be-announced extras round out the delicious experience.
