Some of the most expensive grocery items are fruits and vegetables. Fresh For All is Philabundance’s response to the vast need for fresh produce in low income communities. Locations are determined based on need and may be in partnership with an area agency or business. Fresh For All distribution is scheduled on the same day and time each week, so local residents can rely on the availability. To receive produce, potential members are asked for basic household information to maintain program funding, but participating in Fresh For All does not affect other benefits received. Almost 10,000 new households were served by this initiative in 2009.
Fresh For All also offers volunteer opportunities allowing a hands-on and interactive experience with communities benefiting from the program. Volunteers are needed to help set up and distribute produce, among other tasks. Each weekly location requires 10-15 volunteers, whose involvement is an integral part of not only distribution, but also community building.
