The Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market and its individual vendors have long supported Philabundance and our mission. Since October of 2003, the Market’s vendors have donated 17.9 million pounds.
In June of 2011 the Produce Market moved from its Galloway Street location to a new state of the art facility on Essington Ave. The original Philadelphia Regional Produce Market opened its doors in 1959 with the “terminal market” concept in produce marketing. This innovative plan worked, bringing dozens of competitive wholesale produce merchants together at a central location that offered easy access for customers. With the new facility the Produce Market can offer even better service, longer shelf-life on product, and easier access to the Market for food businesses and individuals. Its 700,000 square foot facility is equipped and ready to receive, store and move fresh products to valued customers on a daily basis.
Donations in the second quarter (January-March 2012) totaled nearly 429,000 pounds. For all of FY12 to date (October-March), the Produce Market provided Philabundance with more than 1 million pounds and is on pace for its largest pound total in 3 years. So far in FY12, the Produce Market has 6 companies in the Top 25 for all food donors, including one, Ryeco, in the Top 5.
- Ryeco, Inc.: 255,834 pounds
- Procacci: 132,224 pounds
- M. Levin: 112,729 pounds
- Hunter: 86,777 pounds
- Pinto Brothers: 84,994 pounds
- Giordano & Sons: 84,880 pounds
Along with donating to Philabundance, Market vendors also direct trucks/other suppliers to donate to us, increasing pounds to and awareness of Philabundance in the Produce Industry, from truckers to brokers to growers. We are truly thankful for all the support and food that the Produce Market and its vendors give to us and wish them all the best at their new facility!
