Architects Team Up To CANstruct A City Without Hunger

7th Annual Canstruction® Philadelphia Structures to be on view
April 13th – 21st 2013 in the Rotunda at The Shops at Liberty Place
PHILADELPHIA (April 13TH – 21st, 2013)

It starts with one can: to feed the hungry, to lift the spirit, to change the world. Canstruction®, a charity committed to ending hunger, is using ‘one can’ as a catalyst for change. The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ Associate Committee is thrilled to announce Philadelphia’s 7th Annual Canstruction® Competition!

Joining the fight against hunger in Philadelphia in its seventh year, the city’s architects, designers, engineers, and contractors are teaming up to create colossal structures completely out of canned food. Canstruction® is a unique international community service event organized by the design and construction community. In Philadelphia, the event offers designers the opportunity to exhibit our imagination and creativity at work while also demonstrating our concern for the less fortunate members of our local community.

The structures will be prominently displayed in the Rotunda of the Shops at Liberty Place, 1625 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, from April 13th through April 21st, 2013. The event is organized entirely by young aspiring architects, designers, engineers, and philanthropists. Canstruction® begins with an intense, 12-hour build night on April 12th, and when the exhibit concludes on April 21st, all of the food is donated to Philabundance, the Delaware Valley’s hunger relief organization. Last year’s event provided over 87,000 meals to those in need across the Delaware Valley! Since its humble beginning in 1992, Canstruction® has donated over 20 million pounds of food to community food banks around the world, demonstrating that we can have a positive, tangible impact on the alleviation of hunger and malnutrition.

“Internationally, this competition puts a spotlight on the issue of hunger in America and around the world, a problem which affects thousands of families and individuals. Locally, the competition allows creative people in the Philadelphia design community the opportunity to make a difference and be a catalyst for positive change in our own backyard,” says Jared McKnight, Canstruction® Philadelphia 2013 Event Chair. “Canstruction® showcases the best and brightest talent in Philadelphia’s design community while supporting an amazing local organization, Philabundance, to help drive hunger out of our community. Each year, it is incredible to see the impact our teams can make with nothing more than cans of food and creativity. One can make a difference!”
