Bag of Thanks Food Drive Will Provide Holiday Meals to Families in Need

Giant Food Stores and Philabundance partner to help families in need this winter

Philadelphia, Pa.- October 26, 2010- A recent survey conducted by Philabundance found that the need for food assistance in the Delaware Valley has increased by 22% over the past year and 66% in the past two years. As an answer to the growing need, Giant Food Stores and Philabundance are launching  Bag of Thanks, a virtual holiday food drive from November 5 to November 7 that will provide holiday meals to families in need in the Delaware Valley this holiday season.

Giant Food Store shoppers can help their neighbors in need at six Giant Food locations across Bucks, Montgomery and Delaware counties.  Over the course of the weekend, shoppers can participate in Bag of Thanks by making $5 or $10 donation at the register during check out to purchase a virtual bag of groceries, which will provide a complete holiday meal to our neighbors in need across the Delaware Valley.  Bags include mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn, rice, carrots, chicken, yams, cheddar broccoli and rice mix and pasta.

Philabundance just completed its annual survey of a sample of its 500 member agencies to measure the need for emergency food assistance.  In addition to a 22% increase in need over the past year, the survey  found that more than 80% of Philabundance’s agencies saw an increase in new clients walking through the door asking for help. These numbers indicate that there are more people than ever before in need of food assistance. With the mounting need for food assistance and a decrease in non-perishable food donations, it is challenging for Philabundance to keep up with the growing demand.

“Our Giant Food Store shoppers are some of the most generous people around. Thanks to them, our Bag Hunger initiative was a huge success,” stated Christopher Brand, community relations manager of Giant Food Stores. “We want to give our shoppers another chance to respond to the growing need in our communities this holiday season by offering them a simple way to donate  meals to families in need.”

“This virtual food drive with Giant Food Stores comes at a perfect time. The holidays and winter months are a tough time for the growing number of families who are struggling to put food on the table,” said Bill Clark, president and executive director of Philabundance. “Many people must choose between paying the utility bill and food for their family during winter months. Bag of Thanks is great way the public can help get these families the holiday meals they deserve.”
