Because You Give, Yolanda’s Kids Have Food

photo1This fall, Yesica, 9, will be entering fifth grade.* She and her two siblings just can’t wait to meet their new teachers and see their friends again after the long summer break.

Yesica is especially excited about school this year, as she recently decided she wants to be a therapist when she grows up, and knows that doing well in school is the first step in meeting her dream. But she won’t succeed in her classes without regular access to healthy food.

Fortunately, Yesica can depend on breakfast and lunch each weekday through the free meal program at school. But during evenings and weekends, her mom, Yolanda, struggles to fill her family’s table with balanced meals.

Yolanda’s only income is a small amount of disability and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, which means paying bills and buying food each week can be a real challenge. That’s why your support of Philabundance matters so much.

Because you choose to give, Yolanda can supplement her food budget by visiting the pantry at Gibson Temple Baptist Church — a Philabundance partner agency. Yolanda is able to pick up nutritious staple items, lean protein and fresh produce to nourish her growing children. It’s a comfort for her to know Yesica and her other little ones have consistent access to healthy food.

“Thank you,” she says to generous friends like you. “You have helped me and my family.”

Yolanda isn’t alone. She says there are many people in the community — including many families with school-aged children — who wouldn’t be able to feed their kids regularly if it wasn’t for your support of hunger-relief programs. You’re making the Delaware Valley an even better place to call home. Thank you!
