Cupcake Smash is Back!
As I diligently prepare for its fourth year, the genesis of Cupcake Smash is worth telling. I come from a long line of Polish women who not only knew their way around a kitchen, but possess the inherent need to help others. This, coupled with my affection for competitive reality television of the culinary variety (I’m looking at you Candace Nelson and your fancy cupcake ATM), motivated me to bring my vision to life. The involvement of Philabundance seemed like a no-brainer. In my previous work life, I spent countless hours distributing an assortment of promotional samples to an abundance of reluctant recipients. Needless to say, I found myself swimming in a sea of non-perishables that would have otherwise gone to waste had I not made the choice to donate to them. In December 2010 an email was sent, a meeting was scheduled, and the wheels were set in motion for what would quickly become a beloved annual affair.
I’ve worn many hats in my day, but serving as the “Cupcake Coordinator” for Philabundance Cupcake Smash has been by far the most rewarding. The reward is not measured in dollar signs or ticket sales, the number of Twitter followers or Facebook likes. The reward is knowing that an idea, presented on whim, has blossomed into something that will leave its mark on hunger. I never would have imagined that Cupcake Smash would not only attract a diverse group of willing participants, but raise enough funds to provide more than 50,000 meals to those in need. It’s not too shabby for a little event that started out on the outdoor patio of a local restaurant.
There are many moving parts that have worked tirelessly to bring ideas to fruition and I’m both honored and humbled to be standing at the helm. The event wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for the individuals who share my passion for food and philanthropy. They deserve a pat on the back, a high five, and “thank you” highlighted in gold. Our joint efforts are making a difference. Cheers to the continued success of Cupcake Smash and I look forward to four more years!
