Eastern Center for Arts and Technology students in the SkillsUSA organization proudly presented Philabundance with hundreds of dollars to provide meals to needy individuals and families March 19. Through sales and raffles, the students collected more than $700 for Philabundance.
“It’s really great,” Philabundance representative Evan Post said. “We couldn’t do anything that we do without people like this. This is the only thing that lets us be effective.”
The students were excited to hand over the $722.32 check to Post and help feed hundreds of people throughout the region. Post said the group’s donation will be able to purchase approximately 1,500 meals for people in the region.
“This is what SkillsUSA is all about,” Eastern’s morning session SkillsUSA Treasurer Amy Pertuset said. “It’s about giving back and using our skills.”
Morning session SkillsUSA President Marian Wiggins said the collection is an annual event, although each year the students select a different organization to receive the donation. She said last year they gave money to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Additionally, while working on donations for Philabundance, the group also collected money for the Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief. Later in the year, she said, they hope to make a donation to Cradles for Crayons.
