Father’s Day Special: Repack Supervisor Damien on His Daughter & Giving Back
Job Title: Repack Supervisor… and Dad Extraordinaire!
How long have you been working at Philabundance? I’ve been working at Philabundance since October 2010. I initially interviewed for another position in the warehouse, but my sunny personality won out and I was placed in Repack! I’ve been working with volunteers since my first day. I guess I’m more of a people person than I thought I was; volunteers really bring the best out of me.
You bring your daughter, Samaia, to work with you, especially on volunteer Family Nights. Why is it important to you that Samaia volunteers? Because she gets to see that everybody has it different; she has a meal to eat and Hot Wheels toys to play with so for her to come and learn that there are people who don’t necessarily have those things, it helps teach her to not take things for granted. Plus, she really loves it.
Favorite part of Family Nights with Samaia? Family night shifts are awesome! She’s a kid who wants to come hang out with her daddy and I think that’s rare. Plus, she’s only 9-years-old and she actually enjoys the work— that’s rare, too. We get to the warehouse and she wants to be out on the floor and working. She appreciates my work and hopefully that will stay with her as she gets older. I’m a little bit of a softy when it comes to my daughter… she’s spoiled, but a good kind of spoiled.
What is your favorite part of working at Philabundance and especially, working with volunteers? My favorite thing about working here is that there is a purpose, and it isn’t to feed someone’s wallet, it’s to feed people; I’m actually making a difference. Working with volunteers every day means I get to experience and meet so many different people. Business professionals and hard-working individuals with so many different personalities. The fact that they all come here, give their time and don’t get paid is great in of itself.
