Mayor Michael Nutter helps to present Harvester of Hope Award to recipients.

Hunger Action Month may be officially over, but here at Philabundance, we are fighting hunger all day, every day. That’s why every year, we recognize an organization and an individual with the Harvester of Hope award. The Harvester of Hope Award is given by Philabundance in recognition of those individuals or organizations who are leading the way in the spirit of fighting hunger and helping our neighbors throughout the Delaware Valley.

During an intimate reception, Philabundance, with the help of the honorable Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, honored Shire Pharmaceuticals and Sharon Stone, volunteer, for their dedication to the fight against hunger.

In 2010, Shire organized The Great Food Fight!, a two week long food drive competition among high schools in the Delaware Valley. The 67 tons of food raised during this unique initiative amounted to 13% of the total food drive food collected in 2010. 67 tons of food equates to 134,000 meals for those in need in the Delaware Valley. That’s amazing!

Bridgeton, NJ resident, Sharon Stone was honored because of her strong commitment to volunteering with Philabundance over the last two years. Sharon has volunteered at each of Philabundance’s Fresh For All sites and always brings family and friends with her to help. Day in and day out, rain or shine, Sharon is on the front lines fighting hunger.

Fighting hunger is Philabundance’s job, but our Harvester of Hope award winners show similar dedication to the fight against hunger and we are so grateful to them!
