Spend some time this summer volunteering!

There are a lot of things that come to mind when we think of summer – beaches, boats, hot air and cool water, and of course vacation. For many residents in the area, you’re not really living unless you’re spending much of the summer “down the shore”.  As a non-beach goer, I get to enjoy everyone else’s vacations when I can finally find a parking space near my apartment in Center City. But here’s something to consider, hunger never takes a vacation.

People get away to forget about their worries, but for those struggling to feed themselves and their families the worries never go away. At Philabundance, the summer months are no less challenging than the rest of the year, especially for our volunteer program. With so many people away, we have fewer and fewer people to help in our vital food distribution process. On the other hand, one of the best things about summer here is our abundant supply of fresh produce. I love coming to work when we’ve just received a truck full of bananas; the whole place fills with their aroma. With our volunteer strength dwindling we desperately need people to help sort, pack, and distribute that produce before it goes bad. Seeing food that could have helped provide a much needed nutritious meal from someone in need get thrown away because it spoiled is heartbreaking. So here’s our call for help: spend a vacation day, or any day for that matter, volunteering at our Hunger Relief Center or one of our other locations. That way, when you’re indulging in a delicious and fresh summer meal, you’ll know you helped someone else do the same.
