Learn about food insecurity

What is food insecurity?

Defined as a lack of access to enough food for a healthy and active life, food insecurity is a pervasive issue that impacts the health and well-being of those who face it. Simply put, it’s when people are not able to afford the food they need. Hunger is a result of being food insecure. Food insecurity exists in every county in the United States.

WHAT CAUSES FOOD INSECURITY

Food insecurity is a complex issue that stems from poverty and systemic racism. High rates of hunger are directly linked to high rates of poverty. Hunger is an issue of resources and access, worsened by the many existing obstacles people face when trying to establish economic security, like:

  • Low-wage jobs or part-time hours
  • Transportation challenges
  • The high cost of housing, healthcare, and childcare
  • And many others

Millions of people in America are just one job loss, missed paycheck, or medical emergency away from becoming food insecure.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF FOOD INSECURITY

Food insecurity can have a detrimental impact on health and well-being. Some common effects include:
  • Serious health complications, including diabetes, hypertension, and depression
  • Damage to a child’s ability to learn and grow, including delays in body and brain development
  • Impossible trade-offs between meeting basic needs, such as paying for food vs. rent
