Philabundance and Sesame Street Host Community Screening Dealing with Hunger
By Kerry Luksic
Throughout its history, Sesame Street has taught children more than just their ABCs and 1-2-3s. Along the way, this iconic show has introduced various family situations that children deal with—from divorce to chronic illnesses. Now, Sesame Street is introducing the growing issue of child hunger. On October 9, Sesame Street will introduce the character, Lily, the newest addition to the “Sesame Street” team. The 7-year-old child Muppet will be introduced and featured during a special primetime episode titled “Growing Hope Against Hunger.”
The episode will feature celebrity guests Brad Paisley and his wife, Kimberly Williams Paisley, as well as the regular crew of “Sesame Street” residents, including Elmo, Bert and Grover. “Sesame Street” hopes that the episode will help address issues about poverty and hunger and open up a discussion.
In support of this powerful message on child hunger, Philabundance and Sesame Workshops are hosting a community screening of Sesame Street’s “Growing Hope Against Hunger” episode on Tuesday, October 11 at 10:30 am. The episode will show the character Lily and her family’s ongoing struggle with hunger. During the special episode, the vibrantly colored Muppet will visit a community garden and will obtain food and volunteer at a food pantry. Lily will also talk about her family’s hunger issues with the rest of the cast.
The Philabundance screening will showcase the entire program and provide educational opportunities for families around the issue of hunger in America. Philabundance supporters and their preschool-age children are invited to view this special episode. After the screening, guests will tour Philabundance’s Hunger Relief Center. This workshop will provide a great educational experience for discussing the issue of hunger with younger children.
