On September 12, 2013, Philabundance celebrated the 2013 Harvester of Hope Award winners, Meeghan Kersten and Subaru of America, at a special luncheon at the Hard Rock Café in Philadelphia. The Harvester of Hope Award is given by Philabundance in recognition of individuals and organizations who are leading the way in the spirit of helping our neighbors throughout the Delaware Valley. Their spirit of giving is shown through their initiative to do something for others without personal gain.  Also attendances to honor the 2013 winners were former Harvester of Hope 2012 recipient Melissa Templeton and Bob Donovan, father of Patrick Donovan, the 2010 recipient of the Harvester of Hope award.

Meeghan, a 7th grade student at Albert M. Greenfield, was honored for her annual summer food drive, which she has held for Philabundance for the past five years. She personally delivered hand written letters asking family, friends and neighbors to donate to her food drive. Since 2009, Meeghan has donated more than 6,500 meals for families in need. Meeghan has also used her creativity and artistic abilities to raise funds for Philabundance. This past July, The Abbaye featured her artwork, and allowed guests to purchase the featured artwork, with proceeds benefiting Philabundance. Over 30 pieces of paintings, bird mobiles, sculptures, corkboards, soap sweaters and spin art collages were on display.

fSubaru of America was recognized for their continuous support of Philabundance and community members who benefit from Philabundance’s services. In total, Subaru has donated more than $13,200 dollars and more than 350 tons of food which equates to more than 726,400 meals. Subaru has approached the fight against hunger from every angle while rallying employees and the community to join the fight, including being a partner in the Spread the Love campaign.  Matt Ritter, director of the Philadelphia zone office for Subaru, was present to accept the award on behalf of Subaru of America.

At the end of the ceremony, Ritter presented Philabundance’s Executive Director Bill Clark with a donated 2014 Subaru Tribeca for Philabundance staff to use in order to help serve the Delaware Valley.

Philabundance is looking forward to working with Meeghan and Subaru of America in the future as they continue to raise awareness of hunger action in their communities, and beyond!
