Philabundance to Raise 50,000 Meals this September for Hunger Action Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philadelphia, PA, (September 1, 2017)—According to a new report by Feeding America, hunger is a crisis impacting 1 in 5 people in the Philadelphia area, while the national average is 1 in 8. Throughout September, Philabundance will raise awareness of hunger and launch a campaign to raise $25,000 to provide 50,000 meals for the hundreds of thousands of people in our area who don’t know where their next meal is coming from – or if they’ll have one at all.

Theresa is a Philabundance client who relies on its weekly free produce distribution in New Jersey. “My son knows we’re in tough times. Visiting Fresh For All [free produce market] has made a huge difference for my family. I’m very grateful to the donors who make this possible.”

Hunger Action Month events and promotions include:

  • From September 1-30, our generous sponsors Fingerpaint, Kampus Klothes, PECO and PJM Interconnection will match individuals’ donations. Usually, a $1 donation provides two meals to help feed those in need, but in September, $1 will provide four
  • On Hunger Action Day, September 14, Philabundance and partners will host a “No SNAP Cuts” event at City Hall at 9 AM. More details to come.
  • PantryBoxes, a new food program for seniors, begins just in time for Grandparents’ Day on September 10. Philabundance currently distributes 4,500 USDA-donated food boxes each month, but there are many more hungry seniors in the area. A generous sponsor, The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust, is funding 15-pound boxes for a six-month pilot program, providing an additional 625 boxes to seniors who would NOT otherwise get this necessary food. Media is invited to attend a distribution and speak with seniors about receiving this food.
  • Philabundance Community Kitchen culinary arts job training program will hold open houses on September 6 and 13 to recruit new students for its 14-week program. Learn more about PCK.
  • Fare & Square, the nation’s first nonprofit grocery store in Chester, PA, is celebrating its 4th anniversary with a block party on Saturday, September 30 from 11 AM – 3 PM, featuring food samples, a DJ, a moon bounce, a raffle and other family-friendly activities.

Additionally, Fare & Square will continue to host the Chester Farmers Market, with partner The Food Trust, offering cooking demos on Thursday, September 14 and Thursday, September 28. All attendees will receive $4 in coupons and the first 25 cooking demo participants will receive a $10 Fare & Square gift card.
