Meet Philabundance’s Government Relations Associate and learn how she’s helping us fight hunger!

Government Relations Assoc Emma Kornetsky

Name: Emma Kornetsky

Years at Philabundance:

My role as Government Relations Associate will allow me to… advocate for policies and programs that address hunger and poverty.

The most misunderstood thing about politics is: Regular citizens really do have a say in how our government works. Your voice absolutely matters, you just have to use it!

Is donating food the only way to solve the problem of hunger?
Because 1 in 4 people in the Philadelphia area faces hunger we need to ensure these individuals get the food they need, and food donations help with this. However, we also need to remember that hunger is a symptom of poverty, and it will only go away when every person has sufficient resources to meet all of their needs— from nutrition to childcare to utilities. This means we need more jobs and higher paying jobs, as well as improved government support for struggling families. Hunger is not an inevitability. Hunger is a solvable issue, but we need your help to tackle these underlying causes.

Favorite food:
Macaroni and cheese with peas (and extra cheese!)

My friends always make fun of me for:
How passionate I am about Philadelphia and how much I talk about my love for this city (considering I grew up in the Boston area). I am so lucky to call Philadelphia home!

The most inspiring experience I’ve had so far at work is:
Talking to volunteer food pantry directors and volunteers who serve their communities with such devotion, and ask for nothing in return.

You may not know that I… started working at Philabundance as an Americorps VISTA!

If I could ask our readers to do one thing right now, I’d say: Have your voice heard by calling one of your representatives and telling them about an issue that is important to you. Dial 888-398-8702 and follow the prompts. It may seem scary, but there is nothing to be afraid of! The person who answers the phone won’t question you. They will just write down your message and share it with your representative, who will then take that information into consideration when they vote. Not sure what to talk about? You could let them know that you care about child nutrition and want to protect the Community Eligibility Provision and prevent block-granting of school meals. Give it a shot!
