“Spread the Love” success

By Gloria Blakely

Philabundance declared its 15-day Spread the Love food drive a resounding success thanks, in large part, to ShopRite and Facebook fans. This food drive concentrated on collecting jars of peanut butter and jelly, a popular staple in demand in low-income households throughout the Delaware Valley. ShopRite pledged to donate a jar of peanut butter or jelly for every new fan signing into the Philabundance Facebook page between January 31 and February 14.

Word got around about the ShopRite challenge. “The second annual Spread the Love campaign is a testament that people in the Delaware Valley want to help fight hunger,” says Bill Clark, president and executive director of Philabundance, “and it could not happen without ShopRite and all our supporters on Facebook, including the 4,800 new ones acquired during the campaign. Social media is such a powerful tool and it is fantastic that Philabundance can utilize it to mobilize people in our community to make an impact.”

Philabundance serves approximately 65,000 people per week in the Delaware Valley, making it the largest hunger relief organization in the area. More than 900,000 people here risk chronic hunger and malnutrition. Philabundance distributed 17 million pounds of nutritious food to abate the problem in 2009.

Having thousands of people respond to the need for donations this year was tremendous.  And, their response arrived at a lovely time, Valentine’s Day.

“ShopRite Partners in Caring is proud to support Philabundance and its Spread the Love campaign in this effort to bring simple comfort foods to those who need them most,” states Christine Magyarits, community relations manager for ShopRite. “What could be more simple and caring than peanut butter and jelly?”

Folks also brought peanut butter and jelly to a Spread the Love event and/or signed up for the Philabundance newsletter. Those who did both were entered in the contest to win a $500 travel voucher from U.S. Airways.
