Dover —Sunoco Inc. is partnering with Philabundance and the Food Bank of Delaware to conduct a major food drive during the upcoming NASCAR race weekend.

The food drive will take place June 1-3 at the Dover International Speedway, located at 1131 N. DuPont Highway. Tickets to the event and more information can be found by calling 800-441-RACE or by visiting DoverSpeedway.com.

“For families in need, summer months are not carefree because of the higher grocery bills that result when kids no longer get school breakfast and lunches available during the school year,” Philabundance President and Executive Director Bill Clark said in a news release. “Summer months can create a dilemma for thousands of families trying to figure out how to put three meals on the table every day. Hunger relief organizations across the country experience spikes in need during summer months and a decrease in food donations, which makes the Sunoco food drive at Dover International Speedway a critical initiative.”

Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe said in the news release that she is proud to have the Food Bank partner with Sunoco, Philabundance and the speedway to meet the needs of more than 25 percent of Delawareans who experience hunger regularly.

The food bank distributes between seven and 10 million pounds of food and grocery products each year, the news release stated. It has a network of 475 hunger-relief program partners throughout the state and provides thousands of meals a month for children through its After-School Feeding Program, Summer Food Service Program and Backpack Program.

The food bank’s programs provide for more than 241,000 Delawareans at risk of going without meals each year, according to the news release.

Philabundance provides food access to people in need in partnership with organizations and individuals, according to the news release.

At a cost of 50 cents per meal, direct service programs and a network of almost 500 member agencies in nine counties provide food for 65,000 people, the news release said. In 2011, Philabundance distributed 21 million pounds of food.
