The Generosity of a Stranger

Posted by Philabundance Events on April 13th, 2012

Outside of the Community Food Center, a long line of families and individuals are waiting to stock their shelves with groceries for the week ahead.  The Philabundance Community Food Center is our choice food cupboard that allows the people we serve to choose from available food items rather than receiving a pre-packaged bag or box, promoting a sense of dignity. On one particular day, one man passing by the long line decided to stop.

As he observed the line, he became overwhelmed by a sense of duty. Brought to tears at the sight of his fellow neighbors moving through the line, he dug into his wallet, pulled out a $100 bill, put it in my hand and said, “I’ve never seen anything like this… it’s all I can give right now”. He was a stranger to the people in line but on that day, he chose to take a stand and say “I won’t ignore this”.

In the fight against hunger, an issue so complicated and dire, are you going to choose to ignore or do something? One person alone cannot solve the problem, but together whether through your voice, volunteerism or donation (small or large) we can choose to take action and to boldly look into the heart of this issue. Will you take that step, will you join me?
