Us vs. Them

Posted by Kali Hamilton on December 14th, 2010

The vitriolic comments posted to stories regarding poverty undeniably show a persistent view of “the poor” as a group somehow different from “us”.  A group that is inherently defective and in need of our charity, but ultimately unfixable.  Not so for Ms. Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva, whose take on addressing poverty is not only insightful, but truly inspiring.  Her ideas mirror the values we at Philabundance hold dear as well.  That there *is* a better way, that we *can* effect change and that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and be given the opportunity to succeed and prosper.  Many thanks to Jess, who’s recent talk on TED, a small nonprofit devoted to allowing people of different industries share inspirational ideas,  reinvigorated my conviction and passion for our mission.
