World Milk Day

Earlier this month we celebrated World Milk Day, a day established by the Food and Agriculture Organization to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. To celebrate, Philabundance staff Sean Breslin and Devin Hunter joined the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Feeding Pennsylvania and the American Dairy Association for a tour of Ar-Joy Farms in Chester County.

Owned and operated by Duane and Marilyn Hershey, we saw first-hand Ar-Joy’s 600 head of cattle milked three times a day, around the clock. Part of this bounty goes to Fill A Glass With Hope, a Feeding Pennsylvania program aimed at supply food banks, like Philabundance, with nutrient-rich milk.

With support from Wawa, the Fill A Glass With Hope program helps Philabundance agencies purchase milk at a reduced cost, allowing our agencies to offer healthy dairy products to communities throughout Pennsylvania.

Ar-Joy also supplies Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms in Lansdale, which partners with Manna on Main Street to distribute milk to pantries in Montgomery County. Their farm is committed to sustainable agriculture, and is working to install a methane digester that will convert food waste and cow manure into electricity for the farm.

Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to understand the nutritional needs of cattle, and the role that cow care, comfort, health and well-being play in milk production. We were also able to learn about on-farm sustainability and stewardship practices.

Thanks to Duane, Marilyn, and all the farms and organizations working together to help feed our neighbors in the Delaware Valley.
