Your Support Helps Transform a Community

Posted by Philabundance on November 1st, 2016

LaToya is a perfect example of how important it is for every community to have access to a grocery store. She works as a nurse and knows her family needs to eat a balanced diet full of fresh produce, dairy and protein. But as a single mom to her three children — ages four, six and eight — her tight budget makes it hard to afford the most nutritious foods.

Your gifts help LaToya — and countless other neighbors — through programs like Fare & Square. As the first nonprofit grocery store of its kind in the nation, Fare & Square is a supplement to the Philabundance partner agencies that already help those in need of food assistance.

LaToya lives just two blocks from Fare & Square and is so glad she can shop regularly to keep her shelves stocked with healthy food. Because the store is open from 8 am to 8 pm, it’s perfect for her often-hectic schedule. The resource will be especially helpful during the winter break when her two older children won’t receive school meals each weekday while school is closed.

LaToya says your support means a lot because she knows it’s helping her little ones’ healthy development — both through the affordable groceries she can buy and a nearby food pantry that helps her get through the end of the month.

One of the things LaToya and other shoppers love most about Fare & Square is the “Carrot Cash” program that allows members to earn extra money which is good on future purchases. The healthier the food item, the more “Carrot Cash” it earns. It’s just one more way your support is helping bolster the health of the entire community.

“Thank you,” says LaToya. “It’s great to be able to get healthy food for your family so close.”
