Philabundance to Raise 50,000 Meals this September for Hunger Action Month

Philadelphia, PA, (September 1, 2016)—September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger throughout the month. In the Philadelphia area, hunger is a crisis that impacts 1 in 4 people, which is almost twice the national average of 1 in 7. To help feed its neighbors in need, Philabundance is launching a campaign to raise $20,000 and 10,000 pounds of food to provide 50,000 meals.
#PlateItForward is a new campaign during which Philabundance is asking the public to take action to help fill the empty plates of its neighbors in need by donating, advocating and volunteering for Philabundance.
“Philabundance helps provide for my husband and I who are both on disability and were let go from our jobs. Although I have a retirement pension, and my husband collects food stamps, it is often not enough to provide us with healthy, nutritious food. Philabundance helps us make ends meet, and we are forever grateful to its programs and donors,” said Fresh For All client, Debbie.

– From September 1-30, thanks to sponsor Fingerpaint, all donations up to $7,500 will be matched. Usually, a $1 donation will provide 2 meals to help feed those in need, but during September, $1 will provide 4 meals.
– On September 8, Philabundance will kick-off this month-long campaign at its Hunger Relief Center in South Philadelphia with the top hunger-fighting organizations and advocates in the area, including Philabundance Founder, Pamela Rainey Lawler, campaign sponsor, Fingerpaint, State Representative and Philadelphian Donna Bullock, who has experienced hunger first-hand, and partners Chester County Food Bank, The Food Trust, The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, and Share Food Program.
– Fare & Square, Philabundance’s nonprofit grocery store in Chester, PA, will offer daily fresh produce samples and a 25% discount on those items at the register. The grocery store will also celebrate its 3rd year anniversary on September 24 with cooking demonstrations, elected officials and more. Chester Upland School District employees are also eligible to receive a 10% discount on all purchases in the store with a valid employee I.D. this month, and all year round.
Hunger Action Month is an initiative of Feeding America, the nation’s leading network of top-performing food banks. Thanks to a $45,000 Nationwide Foundation grant through Feeding America, Philabundance will be able to fund its Fresh For All free produce distributions, which provides almost 42,000 pounds of fresh produce at nine locations each week.
