Food Today, Food Tomorrow, Food for a Lifetime

Ending Hunger for Good

For more than 35 years, Philabundance has focused on providing emergency food for our communities. While this is vitally important to relieving hunger today, in 2019 Philabundance officially expanded our mission to include a focus on understanding and addressing the root causes of hunger. We call this work Ending Hunger for Good (EHFG).

Ending the Line

Our Approach

Many of our neighbors are faced with a cycle of no-win decisions: Do I buy food or medicine? Heat or eat? Pay for lunch or a bus pass? Ending Hunger For Good (EHFG) is Philabundance’s bold initiative to disrupt the cycle of spending tradeoffs between food and other necessities that perpetuate food insecurity.

By pairing food with the social determinants of health interventions provided by other community organizations, Philabundance will increase stability and long-term overall food security in the communities we serve, while helping to shorten the line at area food distribution sites.

OUR History

In 1984, Philabundance was founded by an idealist named Pamela Rainey Lawler who saw perfectly good food going to waste, and, at the same time, saw people going hungry.

From the back of her Subaru, Pam started bridging the gap between excess food going to waste and neighbors in our communities struggling with food insecurity. What started out as a small food rescue organization operating out of Pam’s Subaru, 35+ years later, is an innovative, impactful and collaborative organization distributing more than 50 million pounds of food a year to those in need of emergency food services.

Philabundance is a proud member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks leading the fight against hunger in the United States.
