Ending Hunger For Good

For more than 35 years, Philabundance has focused on providing emergency food in order to relieve hunger in five counties in PA and four counties in NJ. This is important work, but it doesn’t ensure that the same people aren’t hungry again tomorrow or in the future. So, we are expanding our work by pursuing a bold new strategy to help End Hunger For Good.

Our Approach

Many of our neighbors  are faced with a cycle of no-win decisions: Do I buy food or medicine? Heat or eat? Pay for lunch or a bus pass? Ending Hunger For Good (EHFG) is Philabundance’s bold initiative to disrupt the cycle of spending tradeoffs between food and other necessities that perpetuate food insecurity.

By pairing food with the social determinants of health interventions provided by other community organizations, Philabundance will increase stability and long-term overall food security in the communities we serve, while helping to shorten the line at area food distribution sites.

Working with community organizations that provide critical life skills and services allows Philabundance to engage in holistic strategies that provide food plus:

  • Education
  • Financial literacy
  • Health services
  • Housing
  • Job training and Workforce Development

Jointly delivered services enhance individual and family stability by increasing access to critical resources in a holistic and upstream approach, stabilizing families before they fall into crisis. Philabundance is also partnering with organizations that provide coaching and life skills to help clients navigate resources across a system which can become a barrier to success.

Food + Life Skills

Philabundance will monitor the impact of the program by measuring participants’ stability, self-sufficiency and food security. With coaching through the Pew Charitable Trust’s Evaluation and Capacity Building Initiative, Philabundance is working with our partners on evaluation plans that measure short-and-long-term changes in food security and stability.
