Hunger Action Month 2024

September 10th is Hunger Action Day

Each September, the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks joins together for Hunger Action Month® — the annual national campaign designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of hunger in the United States. Join us this September by volunteering, donating, advocating, or participating in events to help ensure everyone has access to the food they need. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a hunger-free future.

Throughout the month, we’ll take a closer look at how food insecurity is affecting the millions of people we serve in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. We often discuss the effects on children and senior citizens, but there is a much wider scope of individuals experiencing an increased need for healthy food donations that some might not consider, such as military veterans, the LGBTQIA+ population, and college students. We want to make sure our communities are aware that we offer all of our vital services to each and every individual in need of assistance.

Hunger Action Day

September 10th is Hunger Action Day, a day where collective efforts across the country are focused for greater impact. It’s a day to “Go Orange,” because orange is the color of hunger relief. This Hunger Action Day, we’ll encourage everyone to unite by wearing orange and speaking out on behalf of our neighbors facing hunger.

Hunger Action Month | Advocacy

We encourage everyone this month to #TakeAction and help us raise awareness about food insecurity in our area!

Every action, big or small, is one step closer to an America where no one is hungry. You can choose to donate or advocate. You can choose to volunteer or raise awareness. You have a choice. We hope you choose to help Philabundance to end hunger.

Working with Partners | Wawa

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve received a $200,000 “Fly Beyond” grant from the Wawa Foundation! This generous grant allows us to enhance access to healthy, nutritious meals and snacks for children in our nine-county service area.

Thanks to the Wawa Foundation, we’re relaunching our Kids’ Snack Program, focusing on healthy grab-and-go snacks for kids. Partnering with over 30 K-12 schools, this program will support up to 2,250 families! Some of the snacks include shelf-stable items like whole grain cereal bars and applesauce, as well as fresh options like bananas and house-made hummus from the talented chefs at Philabundance Community Kitchen.

Celebrating 40 years of impact

Philabundance’s story began in 1984 with one person’s vision. Pamela Rainey Lawler noticed an abundance of perfectly good food going to waste and simultaneously saw people in her community struggling with hunger. Moved by this disparity, she started a food rescue operation using just her Subaru, aiming to bridge the gap between surplus food and those facing food insecurity. This  laid the foundation for Philabundance, which has since become a beacon of hope and a leader in addressing food security in the Philadelphia region.
