Top Guac 2022

The judges have chosen, and the 2022 Philabundance “Top Guac” Competition winner is Jessica deRivera, Development & Engagement Manager, Billy Penn at WHYY!

Philabundance, The GIANT Company, and Avocados from Peru teamed up for the 2nd annual Top Guac competition. The three guest contestants had 15 minutes to pit, mash, season, and mix up their favorite ingredients to win bragging rights for the best guacamole in Philadelphia!

Our competing chefs were:

  • Taylor Guskind, Dietitian, The GIANT Company
  • Samir Hernandez, Chef, Philabundance Community Kitchen
  • Jessica deRivera, Development & Engagement Manager, Billy Penn at WHYY

Jessica deRivera went “pit to pit” with Philabundance Community Kitchen Chef Samir Hernandez and Taylor Guskind, a dietician for The GIANT Company. The celebrity judges on deck included, GIANT Riverwalk GM Jess Fisher, Avocados of Peru CEO Xavier Equihua, and Philabundance CEO Loree Jones.

Jessica deRivera had the crowd laughing as she explained that her recipe is her boyfriend’s mother’s creation.

“She makes the best guac I’ve ever had. It’s always eaten at Thanksgiving, which is obviously the traditional day for guacamole,” she chuckled.

In celebration of National Avocado Day on July 31st, Avocados from Peru donated 50,000 avocadoes to Philabundance. These avocados will be distributed over the coming weeks to the communities that we serve.

We can’t wait to partner with Avocados of Peru and GIANT next year!
