In celebration of National Avocado Day (July 31), The GIANT Company donated 60,000 avocados to Philabundance and with Avocados From Mexico, hosted the fifth annual Top Guac competition at Philabundance Community Kitchen (PCK). Teams comprising pairs of PCK students and staff and GIANT store managers went pit-to-pit to mash, stir, and mix up their favorite ingredients to win bragging rights for the best guacamole recipe in Philadelphia!
Hosted by 6abc’s Sarah Bloomquist, recipes were judged by Philabundance CEO Loree D. Jones Brown; FOX 29’s Thomas Drayton; Ryan Fukuda, regional business development director, Avocados from Mexico; Kevin Wiegele, fruit merchandising analyst from The GIANT Company; and Jena Wood, dietician from The GIANT Company. Their decision ended in a tie, so guests tasted for the tiebreaker.
This year’s Top Guac winners were PCK student Fayounda Mcfatten and Ron Sirak from GIANT. Most importantly, the donation of 60,000 avocados was distributed to our community partners for the food-insecure neighbors they serve.
