What to Know When Visiting a Distribution Center

Because of the recent SNAP benefit cuts, people may be seeking assistance for the first time. Here are some quick tips to keep in mind prior to your visit.

  • Hours of operation. If you are not sure when they open, make sure to call ahead to confirm their days and hours. Some distribution sites require scheduled appointments; be sure to ask if this is required ahead of your visit.
  • Identification. Some pantries require proof of ID or residency. Be sure to bring your driver’s license, utility bill, or a piece of mail with your name and address.
  • Visiting the pantry. Bring your own reusable bag or box to carry what you receive. You may also need to wait in line until the doors open. Please be patient and understand that the staff are doing their best to support as many people as possible.
  • Dietary restrictions. For people who have strict dietary restrictions (i.e., kosher or halal), make sure the distribution center provides these options before visiting.
