Meet Denise: A Passionate Volunteer Transforming Lives, One Box at a Time

At Philabundance, we’re inspired by volunteers like Denise Lewis, whose commitment to helping others is truly remarkable. As a Community Affairs Liaison at the City Controller’s Office, Denise has been volunteering with us for about seven months, but in that time, she’s made an incredible impact!

Denise often volunteers at our Hunger Relief Center, two to three times a month, sorting and packing food for families and individuals in need. Mainly sorting our Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) also known as our senior boxes, the boxes she prepares often include non-perishable items like pasta, oatmeal, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, and milk—healthy essentials that help sustain and nourish those facing food insecurity.

But Denise’s dedication goes beyond just packing food. She’s built strong relationships with our staff and fellow volunteers, creating a sense of community that makes her time with us even more meaningful. For Denise, volunteering at Philabundance is more than just a way to give back; it’s about making a direct impact on people’s lives.

“Volunteering at a food bank really touches my heart,” Denise says. She’s motivated by the fact that many people are forced to make tough decisions between buying groceries, paying bills, or affording medication. One of her most rewarding experiences is seeing the full circle of her work. “When I prepare a senior box and then go to a community event, I see the impact I’ve made,” she shares. “It’s a full circle moment when I realize, ‘This is the box I helped put together.’”

Among all the activities Denise is involved in as a Community Affairs Liaison, she says that volunteering at Philabundance is where she feels most fulfilled. Seeing the lines of people at food distributions and the smiles on their faces brings her joy and reinforces her commitment to serving the community. “Where there’s a need, I serve the community,” she says.

Denise embodies the spirit of giving that fuels our work here at Philabundance. Her dedication and passion for helping others make her a true Hunger Hero, and we’re grateful to have her as a volunteer, making a difference one box at a time.
