Leslie Ferndandez, a graduate of the Philabundance Community Kitchen (PCK)’s culinary program, recently began a new role as a PCK catering and events cook.
Leslie’s journey at PCK began after wanting a change in her day-to-day life and knowing she had a passion for baking. After graduating with class #107, Leslie initially stayed with PCK as a general cook, assisting the team with various meals and treats they had in the making. Now, she will join the team to create and fulfill order for various events, both in- and outside Philabundance.
“Originally, I was here in a support role, so I still felt like a student,” Leslie said. “This is my first real back-of-house type of kitchen work, so every day I feel like I’m learning something new, whether that’s a new technique, plating, or just existing in the space with other people. I went from being in the background to being able to direct. I’m fortunate enough that I have a really good team. These students are phenomenal—I’m able to get things done in a way that I am proud of and the students are really proud of.”
Outside the kitchen, Leslie loves to spend time with her son and explore the city. As a new culinary professional, she is very excited to experience the newest restaurants and chefs the city has to offer.
PCK’s culinary program is free to adults who qualify for public benefits and fulfills SNAP work requirements. Learn more about Philabundance Community Kitchen’s culinary program.
